Portrait of the Night by Yanoda Portrait of the Night by Yanoda
Here is a portrait of the beautiful Princess Luna originally made by ~LightbulbClouds. The original piece can be found in *GSphere's Opencanvas 9012 which was made by LightbulbClouds.

Working on this piece has been quite enjoyable and allowed me to experiment with different shading and styles (some are available in the AI file provided). ~LightbulbClouds and several of my fellow Colleagues in the :iconmlp-vectorclub: were a great help to touch up and address some points I missed or needed to fix. :)

I absolutely love your shading style! I'm not too familiar with AI, as I've only used Ponyscape/Inkscape but do you have the shadows and highlights on a separate layer than the fills, and is it one continuous piece over both the stroke and the fill, or were they done separately?

I set the layering to specific parts of the body like 1 layer is just the ear with the respective shading and highlight effects included for the ear, then layer 2 would be the horn with it's own shading and highlights as well. Example:
Here is a cleaned up version of what I mean (Shading includes both the actual shadows and highlights).

This makes it easier for me to avoid overlapping of the shading effects and keeps it organized.

The shading and highlights are separate parts but are in the same layer that covers both stroke and fill for the respective parts. :)

I hope that was clear enough. :meow:

Okay, that makes sense, the picture of the layers made it really clear, I tend to have all my strokes on one layer and the fills on another, with shading on another in between, breaking up separate layers for different body parts seems like an easier way to manage everything better.

Thank you! I'm going to have to give it a try. Your explanation was great too :)

And on a side note, I like how the layers window is displayed in AI, looks a lot more thought out.
